INTRODUCTION TO CURRENT RESEARCH INFORMATION SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (CRIS)
For HATCH and Other USDA Funded Research Projects

The Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) is required to account for all Federally funded research. A method for such accountability is the Current Research Information System (CRIS) ?a unit of the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES). The CRIS database currently includes information covering over 95% of all publicly supported agricultural and forestry research

This database enables our faculty to identify and describe their comprehensive research programs, monitor related activities and progress, and analyze and report research funding. Tenured and tenure-track faculty with a research appointment should have at least one MAES project for A 3-5 years duration. New faculty with a percentage of research appointment should develop a project within the first year of employment. It is the responsibility of faculty to submit such research projects through the MAES for approval and processing. Once the project is approved, the PI is also responsible for submitting Progress Reports annually throughout the term of the project.

CRIS Forms - Available at http://cwf.uvm.edu/cris/

AD- 416 is the "Research Resume" - completed by the PI or designee when submitting a new project

NEW PROJECTS:

Faculty may choose to participate in a research project as follows:

As the PI on a new individual research project;
As a cooperating PI on a current Multi-State project;
As a cooperating PI on a Departmental "Umbrella Project."
You should now search the CRIS database page to identify existing projects in any subject matter; however, prior to proceeding with the database search, you may wish to review the entire "New Projects" instructions provided on this page.
Search CRIS Database - http://cris.csrees.usda.gov/menu.html
Select your preferred search method (We recommend " Assisted Search")
Select 'Search CRIS by Individual Data Fields'
Select 'Project Type' and drop down to 'Hatch'
Once the search has been completed and you have found your proposed project to be unique, or your have found a Multi-State project in which you would like to participate, you should proceed to the next step outlined in the Checklist. You may also wish to review the Essentials of an Experiment Station Project Outline. These forms require Acrobat Reader.
