In the post-9/11 world, securing our food production supply systems to insure public safety is of critical importance. When the public thinks of potential threats few consider our nation's food and water supply and thanks to a new venture from the University of Maryland, College Park, they may never need to.
The Center for Food Systems Security and Safety (CFS3) is a part of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and was created to provide world-class research, education and outreach on issues related to food and water defense, safety and protection. Our food supply is dependent upon a complex system of interactions among government agencies, international and domestic food manufacturers, farmers, retailers, wholesalers, transportation companies, and consumers. After harvesting, there are many steps necessary to turn raw material into a safe, nutritious and wholesome food product. Threats of intentional contamination of foods with biological, chemical or radiological agents may have major economic implications for the country.
CFS3 will be a leader in the area of disaster response related to food and water resources and a center of knowledge and service in the food protection and safety areas.
In addition to CFS3, the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources has developed successful educational programs in food safety and defense. Units within the college offer one of the nation's first online graduate certification programs in Food Safety Risk Analysis, and are working on additional online courses for food defense.
