The Purpose of this Study:
To determine the possible perceptions of risk from the exposure of billions of people to methylmercury in fish, mercury vapor from certain types of dental fillings, and ethyl mercury in the form of thimerosal added as an antiseptic to widely used vaccines.

Some Background, Methods, Results, Caveats, and Other Select Points:

  • This peer-reviewed, scientific paper was published in 2002.
  • This scientific paper reviews only the human exposure to - and the toxicology of - each of these three types of mercury.
  • Many of mercury’s toxic actions remain unexplained despite thousands of years of history of human exposure to mercury plus recent, intense research on mercury.

A Bottom Line:
The main features of the disposition of methylmercury in people are well known. Nevertheless, some key knowledge gaps remain in: 1) how mercury causes bad effects in people; and 2) how mercury gets into, around, inside of, and is metabolized by, people.

Mercury remains an element of mystery.
