| The University of Maryland and CFNAP: The Center for Food, Nutrition, and Agriculture Policy (CFNAP) is an independent, nonprofit, academic center housed within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources of the University of Maryland—College Park. As such, CFNAP abides by all scientific and professional norms, policies, and procedures of the University System of Maryland. All CFNAP faculty members are research faculty of the University of Maryland with the professional credentials required by the University for the ranks of: Research Professor, Research Associate Professor, Research Assistant Professor, or Faculty Research Assistant. CFNAP Statement of Principles: CFNAP promotes objectivity in its research and related activities through specific measures aimed at ensuring that the design, performance, and reporting of its research is not biased by financial interest(s) of sponsors. Toward this end, CFNAP adheres to the following principles: - Compliance. CFNAP complies with all applicable federal guidelines and research procedures of the University System of Maryland. This includes coordination with the University of Maryland’s Office of Research Administration and Advancement, Institutional Review Board, and other relevant and appropriate university and federal guidelines, policies, and procedures.
- Independence. The views expressed publicly by CFNAP faculty members represent their independent opinions based on their research and analysis of the issues. CFNAP faculty members are not spokespersons for the University of Maryland or any other organization, including the sponsors of CFNAP research projects. CFNAP does not endorse any commercial product or trade names.
- Expository freedom. Sponsors do not interpret, analyze, edit, or cancel publication of the results of research—regardless of the outcome.
- Transparency. All CFNAP research provides clear and complete descriptions of the data and methods used in the analysis. In most cases, the data are publicly available, and other researchers are welcome to replicate our results. Presentations of results—written and oral—disclose the source(s) of extramural funding for that particular project.
- Peer review. CFNAP research is subjected to the academic standard of scientific peer review through presentation at conferences and submission to peer-reviewed journals. CFNAP white papers and conference proceedings undergo internal peer review and typically are reviewed by external experts as well.
- Respect. Dialogue is essential to advance both scientific understanding and good public policy. CFNAP encourages constructive review of its research and respects genuine critiques of the data, methods, results, and conclusions.
The aforementioned constitute, in part, "Good Research Practices" and build on the expected ethical requirements for the conduct of scientific research—the discovery and propagation of useful knowledge. |
